Staring into the
Looking glass
I see every tear,
Every broken heart,
Every pot hole
Of reality
Etched
Upon my face.
The lines beside my eyes
Are from endless laughter,
Only some of which
We're honest, while
Others were masks
And diversions
To hide the depth

My 62nd birthday
Fast approaches
And I look far older
Than I should.
Somehow I've survived
All that those lines
And crevasses

My blue eyes are
Careworn and tired,

A fire still burns

So on my 62nd birthday
I think I'll have
The gray in my hair
Carefully hidden

I'll have a facial,
A massage,
A total makeover,

I think I'll get
A tatoo!

That's why I've chosen the professionally taken photograph of me at a picnic at the very same age, 62, before I began that long slide into the face of old age and degradation that naturally occurs to all of us. But I would strongly suggest not getting a tattoo… A totem to your following the latest fad or craze that began thousands and thousands of years ago when primitive people felt that painful tattoos would be able to fend off the painful signs of aging by embedding charcoal in their knees and elbows in a home remedy for arthritis that never worked.
Also symbols of power and belonging like brands on cattle. It is well-known that when young people get tattoos that start out beautiful, aging has a way of making tattoos turn rather ugly. Getting one at a advanced age like 62 ;-), may or may not be beautiful… Depending upon the eye of the beholder, like everything else.
