Poem Artwork

Solitary and enrobed only by the walls that surround her,

She hears the haunting reverberation of the silent echoes.

While existing amidst the concrete, brick, paint and plaster,

The unchanging and dull scene that has stared at her for years.

She is waiting, yearning, hoping for a tapping at the door,

But alas only the lonely wind howls in sadistic laughter.

The want of human knuckles knocking to announce more

Causes her heart to pound, but is oblivious in its anticipation.

Awakening each morn, eyes red from solitary, restless sleep,

And the vivid dreams of promise, counterfeit dreams,

But somehow her hopeful heart manages to safely keep

Hoping against hope that life and dreams are not what they seem.

She needs the companionship of another heart to beat with hers,

Painfully, excruciatingly throbbing within her pale chest,

But she awaits, knowing love does exist and can fill the void

While another day alone elapses until another night becomes restless rest.
