Will We Be Angels When We Die?
Does death change us, or
are we changed by death.
Life on this earth ceases, but
doesn’t life continue to exist?
Is there room in heaven for one more
soul, or must we wander through
the after-life, even as we did in life,
aimless, thoughtless, forever
cold? Or,
will we be angels when we die?
Aren’t angels created on a different plane
than we? If so, how do we aspire
to a plane that is higher? How do we
reconcile the differences to a child?
Is there room in heaven for one more
winged creature, or must we meander
death’s countless, mundane
corridors?
Will we be angels when we die?
Perhaps in death the question will be
answered. Or perhaps it will not
matter, our souls finally unfettered.
But freedom gained is not without pain.
So live today counting not the loss,
and if anyone is keeping score,
let the game be about halos and wings
no more.
Will we be better people when we die?
