Until

I sought for happiness long and

hard, thinking that finding it

would bring untold contentment,

until

I realized happiness cannot be

found, like a street or address,

happiness is a state of mind

and, coincidentally, so is

contentment.

I longed for riches thinking

that by achieving them, receiving

them, I would have my heart’s desire

until

I realized riches are merely 

the tools through which our 

desires can be achieved, and 

it is only through hard work

that we receive either riches

or our heart’s desire.

I longed for closeness with my

spouse, my best friend, thinking

that would make me a better 

person, more complete,

until

I realized I must search for

completion within myself,

and then, only then, can 

I become close enough

to another person to 

feel, at last, complete.
