The Reunion

I saw you tonight…

We met again after so many years.

You haven’t changed much,

But we both have gotten older somehow.

And I remembered how much I had loved you.

For years, my mind was tormented,

Filled with so many thoughts of only you.

I saw you tonight…

And I remembered how painful it was,

Loving someone I could never have,

Someone I could never hold.

I saw you tonight…

Memories flooded my mind,

My heart skipped a beat or two,

But, strangely, no tear graced my cheek.

I saw you tonight…

And decades of reality swept over me,

Like waves from The Perfect Storm,

Yet my heart regained its composure.

I saw you tonight…

Your countenance revealed

Personal defeats and battles lost.

The beauty of your youth is gone.

I saw you tonight…

And found compassion I had never known.

The love for you is still there,

But felt much differently now.

I saw you tonight…

Joy filled my heart.

We embraced. We laughed.

We spent hours together.

I saw you tonight…

You looked into my eyes

As I revealed my heart

And opened my soul to you.

I saw you tonight…

And for the first time…

You saw me.

Then we parted again.
