Natures way

The Herd

Standing tall, he knows no fear

He gazes ‘cross his green domain

Around him, the forest sounds he hears

Predators, he treats with dark disdain.

He is the strongest and the best

He’s fought for position in the heard

Meets each challenge from the rest

Each spring, when mating calls are heard.

He knows that now he is getting old

As he surveys his concubines

There will come a time he’ll be out in the cold

His reign will end with passing times.

For now, he must protect the herd.

Against the wolf and grizzly bear

The mournful cry of Crow is heard

He pricks his ears and smells the air.

Soon the winter snows will fall

And they will move to lower ground

Greener pastures to them will call.

In spring he’ll fight the Bucks once more.

He raised his head and gave the call

Leads them down the mountain side

He’d smelled the coming of the fall

He is the leader he is their Guide.

Behind he hears the hunting call

The wolf is stirring in the wood

Soon first winters snow will fall.

Cover the ground and grazing food.

This beckons with the "call of the wild." Thank you for this offering, Robin. Love and peace. Regis

Loved the scene you took thru as I was reading here. Same scene I saw many years ago just sitting and watching a herd. Very nice and relaxing read

Very good Robin. I can hear the mating call of those he protects and enjoy his spoils. Lucky beast. Bill
