We all become vulnerable to life's challenges. We can choose to accept them, try to change them or wander aimlessly. Whatever we choose it is our choice.
Distorted visions begin to focus...
Greyness becomes vivid... We bare
our souls and accept
vulnerability in return.
The shadows hold refuge and
keep predators from our lair.
A pit of vipers search for
the weak to inject their venom.
Distancing ourselves from those
whose intentions are honorable,
we become drenched, wind blown
and have no sense to seek shelter.
Trapped like a rat in a maze,
smelling the rewards and having
no guidance we continue our quest
because we know they are there.

So true to life. I like the visual of a maze in this poem because life is full of rights, lefts, and dead ends. Great symbolism...all the way through this one. Take care. Hope you and yours are well.

I think it's important to make right choices for ourselves, but I also believe that we shouldn't beat ourselves up when we've made wrong chices as well...it's all part of the learning and growing process to becoming a better person. Excellent and thought provoking.
like the children of israel in the wilderness, wandering, searching, hoping "its" out there, somewhere, and that they'll eventually get to it. i'm reminded of the lyrics "should i stay, or should i go." choices - the great gift we all possess. your capture it well!
Great poem here it is all in choice and excepting the consequences of our choices.

I love a "self-examination" poem, one that forces the reader to do exactly what the writer has done...think. Paul, that third stanza speaks to me...very smooth, my friend.
Your right, Belle. it definitely isn't Hip Hop. Many times choosing a category is difficult with the choice selections. It would be nice to have a blank category box and allow us to type in our own or at least a box that says miscellaneous.

This is some heavy stuff, very thought provoking and heart exposing. Great write, Paul. But it's listed as hip hop, which it definitely isn't!

I think this sums it up so well. Regardless of how dishonorable, confusing or smothering our lives or the people in our lives become, we must always find a way to stay strong, stay focused and think of the good over the bad.
