Another Day

Cool water gushed from the showerhead,
pounding, cleansing, washing away
more than dirt,
an ablutionary ritual,
my wallowing spirit
needing, thirsting for relief.

Relief! Because at night’s end
I’m filled with unending sorrow
for years lost, suspended
in a meaningless vacuum,
down in a pit of unclear substance…
it’s an endless fight…
climbing out of the hole,
looking for myself in the dark.

I question my identity.

And you say you’ll always love me,
but you don’t like me any more.
I’m aggressive, sharp, and unyielding.
Damn right!
Soft edges got me minimum wage,
and a token fifty at year’s end;
I need to stay alive.

I struggle for a dim semblance of sanity
because that which I must be to survive,
juxtaposes what I am at heart.
Is there no middle ground
where minds blend in common understanding?
I guess not!
It is a dog eat dog kind of world
in which survival overrides living.

I question my identity...

and at night, I disappear under the sheets,
wanting to drift into unconsciousness,
not able to, tossing, turning, turning…
Stop!

I want to know who, or what ‘I’ is,
and what it stands for.
I want a clear passage from where I stand
into my true self – not just an opened door,
but vanishing walls, wide open spaces;
a clear passage to freedom
without definitions, conditions,
compromise or conformity.

Cool water gushed from the showerhead,
pounding, cleansing, washing away
more than dirt,
an ablutionary ritual,
falling in torrential forgiveness,
and just briefly, I feel lighter than air.

I step outside and breathe the summer morning,
I sort through my key ring,
start the car – I’m on my way,
it will be another day at work.

Such honest words, straightforward, yet beautifully poetic.

A poem of courage and determination.

Best regards,

You are good. To be able to make your point very clear and at the same time commune with the literati among us. You put survival ahead of everything in this poem. You plastered your pain all over the screen. You subdued your hate to a whimper. You are good.

Carmen, I really know so very litle, but I know it is hell to be loved but not liked. Or in my case to love and not like. We change and interpersonal relationships change. If each day we could step under a cleansing shower; either imaginary or real and wash away our mistakes; live would be so worth living. You write from the heart and that is where I read from and what gets me in trouble with others. I see the cracks in their exterior and point them out. I see the hunger in their words, and intrude in their passions. Many are called but few are chosen to understand what they write. It is as if they are afraid of reality and avoid taking a dose at any cost; so worried about mental diarrhea. Thank you for writing in the terms I can understand. My wit fails me. I can only say the poem is deap and your heart is sweet. Bill Hugs

I could feel the momentum getting stronger as I read. Very powerful message, indeed. I enjoyed the imagery/comparison of the shower utilized as cleansing/recharging. Truly enjoyed this piece, Carmen. Good work, thanks.

Very powerful write, Carmen!!! There are so many great lines in this creative search, but I loved the phrase, “And you’ll always love me, but you don’t like me anymore!!!” It really hit a cord deep in my being!!! Thank you for sharing your brilliant talent!!! Keep The Faith.

Much insight here, Carmen, and I love the daily ritual of a shower as a means for framing the larger questions of identity, meaning. Very powerful!

Carmen you spoke for many , including me, with an ability to make this most complex subject clear enough to grasp.This is the best I've seen this topic approached. You have an uncanny talent for writing with lucidity, while still maintaining an aura of mystery! At least that's one gift you can give thanks for;-)

Quite a poem, Carmen.

I think we probably all question our identities, probably a little too often for our own good.

Keep feeling lighter than air, and breathing that summer morning!

A "Cool" write.
Very strong work, Carmen.
I feel the goosebumps, have been inside the skin.

The shower is the perfect medium for a daily purge of all that weighs us down and sullies us, cheats us of fully experiencing life, not just surviving. You take us through your emotional transition:

suspended
in a meaningless vacuum,
down in a pit of unclear substance…

I want a clear passage...
not just an opened door,
but vanishing walls, wide open spaces;

This was excellent Carmen, so insightful, I can relate, loved this:

I want to know who, or what ‘I’ is,
and what it stands for.
I want a clear passage from where I stand
into my true self – not just an opened door,
but vanishing walls, wide open spaces;
a clear passage to freedom
without definitions, conditions,
compromise or conformity.

Excellent!

it takes a very enlightened mind to question its identity ... i like how you use the shower imagery as an element of cleansing the mind as well as the body ... it is important to realize our identity is constantly evolving and needs to be nourished with creative verve ... which of course, i'm sure you do ...

Hi Carmen:

Cool write here about being lost:

Many searched for their own identities
yet found that their identities
were always there where they belong;
only they didn't recognize themselves...

Hope you will find yours soon.

Great write of being lost. Well-expressed.
