Due to illness I've been gone longer than I planned. This is my first sonnet since November 2004. All comments are welcome. Carmen

Winterkill

A Spenserian Sonnet
by Carmen Ruggero

Inspired by Cristina Ruggiero’s oil painting of the same title.

I pray you curse be gone from me at last.
With fossilized hands, you closed a rigid girth,
a frigid grasp that held me long and fast,
stealing my breath at the hour of birth.

By whose design am I strapped to this girth,
that chills my heart cold as a winter’s night
where ice encrypts still images of death
and I can’t remember a morning’s light?

I long for the warmth of a summer night,
for jasmine and the touch of cool, sweet rain;
to feel my body swaddled by moonlight
to know just once, I don’t remember pain.

I’ve lived in this cold lonely place, too long!
Perhaps one day summer will sing its song.

I'm still waiting for summer to sing. . . Indiana summers are too short, too muggy, and too "buggy."

Carmen, I'm impressed at the progression of your skills in sonnet writing. The first stanza is particularly strong in artistry and expression.
Good to see you at it again!

So good to read your work again, Carmen! You have been GREATLY missed!

The insightful emotional intelligence and poetic elegance of your work has not suffered for your inactivity -- the sonnet is wonderful!

The following is particularly artful:
"I long for the warmth of a summer night,
for jasmine and the touch of cool, sweet rain;
my body softly swaddled by moonlight
to know just once, I don’t remember pain."

VERY well done!

Be well.

Seems to be a great ekphrastic. But be great to see the painting.
Trust you are in fine fettle now.
So many have left AD. But have wondered as to where you've been.
Good health..

I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me! But NO! It is YOU! It's so good to see you, so often I wondered how you were doing.
The summer sun will shine and radiate it's power of warmth upon you. Thaw your chill, and return you to your light.
Again..so good to see you.

CARMEN!! It is sooo good to see you here again! I have missed you and am so sorry to hear of your extended time of illness. I do hope that the fresh winds of spring health have at last been breathed into your body, mind and spirit. Chronic illness is indeed like a long, hard winter and that is what springs to mind with your well-wrought verses above. No-one has facility with the sonnet form as you do, and you remind me of the skill, grace and beauty that the traditional styles of poetry afford to those who study and master their form. This is a beautiful lament and I like the way it ends on a note of hopeful optimism. Wonderful images with "fossilized hands" and "ice encrypts". Welcome home! Love and peace, Kate xx
