Night fell heavy on the city,
exactly fitting my mood…
exactly as I sat feeling empty;
and simply waiting to die
because my rhyme was spent,
nothing more to say or do
but close my eyes.
And as I watched night
settle behind the buildings,
I heard a distant sound,
a discordant tune
amidst night’s false tranquility,
sang by an errant breeze
and it spoke to me
of things I didn’t understand
or didn’t want to hear.
Nothing left to say or do,
but close my eyes.
But night forced itself into my slumber;
it took me down a road unknown,
and into a valley
where dreams roam free
and randomly chose to
make me see things the eye denies,
the mind, cannot conceive.
There was child, along that road,
abandoned at some point in life;
out there… amidst dawn’s lavender clouds.
She smiled and stretched her arms.
A young one I vaguely recognized,
and then she looked right at me
and there was verse
and rhyme in her clear gaze,
and like a whisper in the night
I heard it swiftly whisk by me
and then I understood:
A poem, a poem I am…
I am with no beginning, I am with no end.
And morning came to me one more time.

Outstanding imagery and flow... "When Night Falls" glows as a page to enrich POETRY. A true poetic feast under the music of Euterpia and approval of ERATO.

Night lasts for only a moment; hope comes with the rising of the sun and words. What a beautifully imaged poem; well done!
