A wife losing her husband best friend in war

Poem Artwork

 Cheesecake

I miss you my love, my friend.

So often, I pass by the same lonely streets in silent contemplation my mind adrift within this day, placid shelter within my thoughts.
Driven not by selfish indignations, but by a hidden indifference to those that sat with sign or paper cup, tattered clothes and smudged stained smile.
My thoughts are with my loss, it is not that I don’t care; my thoughts are with my loss. I weep not for the lost souls in the crowd this day. I weep not for the small hungry-mouth dry.
I am weeping for my love, my heart fallen on distant shores, I am weeping for the chance a chance just to know. Laying my hands upon my knees shedding a tear, in my prayers, I kiss lightly the hand of time and shaking oh my shaking knees.
And at night I cover my head and drift off to
sleep. There are still cold upon the street I know this, the hunger faded by weeping sounds tossing them to sleep. They are in-flight home covered and alone the sentinel watches over their eternal sleep.
Morning blanket tossed over the edge of the bed, slipper covered feet, coffee, paper and snow building up on the stoop, and I weep. A walk to the oven another brush of butter upon the Turkey pulling away from the heat, and I sat on the kitchen floor and shake looking at the wall, look at the door, look at
the picture the small bronze shoe.
The bell rings bringing me from my knees, not the stranger I passed by on the street, not the small child oh god how I wish I could feed; It is an another mother from down the street-a pie , a smile, a hug and silence that friends need.
Let me help you with that. Happy Thanks Giving she says I know he liked cheesecake it was his favorite and then we both weep

Very poignant and telling. One more reason why we should study war no more.
