Her legs in the air,
my hand upon her chest,
I feel her beating heart,
the warmth of her blood-flow,
her trust.
At this moment I need nothing else.
Then thoughts invade -
unwelcome thoughts,
as I recall a news story which claimed
that cruelty to animals is on the increase.
My beloved dog is one of the lucky ones.
Feelings of love are interrupted by feelings of hate.
At this moment I need something else....
....but it's a slippery slope
and who will care for her if I hit the bottom?
- no legs in the air,
just a legless fool
and another victim for a news story.
it is a shame abuse of any type is on the rise
so many fractured minds are full of their own misery
they are too blind to see they are actually demented cowards...
animals who have nothing but loyalty to give need to be treasured
and adorned with love
