I found this poem in my files from years ago, and simply could not toss it out. It brings back warm and sweet memories. I hope you enjoy them, too.

A kitten.

Siamese, at that.

Deep azure blue eyes.

A gleaming coat.

Perching on the back of the couch,

Frolicking in Lil’s hair.

Like yarn, each strand. –

A silver delight.

Playful.

Eager.

Wide-eyed curiosity.

Happy to be living each new day.

A fast development.

A full-fledged cat!

Defining her dinner hour

With an unrelenting howl of uncertainty.

No question who rules.

Defining her space

Without even bothering to ask.

Wood floors.

Window ledges bathed in sunlight.

The foot of Stevie’s bed.

Emily’s pillow.

Atop the afghan

Deep in the closet.

Bries’s unquestionable places.

A mysterious cat.

Where is she now?

    • Hidden in some dark corner.

Behind the pots and pans.

Or under Emily’s clothes on the closet floor.

Maybe napping in the donated clothing sack.

Always beyond arm’s reach.

I fall back

    • respecting her need for privacy.

Yet I want her closeness

I resort to singing out

Brie! - Brie!

Oh – Brie!

A two-toned call. Rise and fall.

She awakes and knows - understands.

I want to hold her.

Stroke her

Love her

She decides she wants it, too.

With a gleeful exuberance

    • sometimes a sleepy alertness –
    • she comes prancing down the hall
      • following my voice.

Eager and happy to be living each new day.

Hardship did not abate her.

A curiosity too keen for discipline.

An open screen door.

Opportunity knocks.

A lost cat.

Hours later. ---

Sorting laundry in a dark, murky garage.

A whimper of a mew.

It’s Brie!

Hidden and veiled in darkness.

Too fearful to cry out.

Too fearful to move.

Overcome with a world bigger than herself.

Only the familiar voice-

The lyrical calling –

Could coach her back to comfort,

To reassurance,

And a restored order of living –

To loving and living each new day.

Then a dark season.

Stevie was not herself.

- an operation.

Anxiety ruled.

Poor Brie.

Seeking as usual, for want of love.

Hold me

Stroke me

Cuddle me

Her answer – a lost temper.

Pain and confusion everywhere.

A depressed cat

For a season.

Finally, full recovery.

Brie had to be taught -- all over again –

That Stevie loved her.

Gently, patiently, steadfastly,

Calling her back.

Just a stroke on the head at first.

Trust me, Brie.

Please trust me.

Patience.

Reassurance

Nurturing

Finally, love won out.

Brie came back

Eager to return the gift.

Once again playful

Curious

Happy to be living each new day.

The final season.

Love and nurturing abound.

Brie discovers Fancy Feast

And becomes even more emphatic about her dinner hour.

Joyfully, I abide.

Brie discovers catnip.

An experience of ecstasy.

Still playful at sixteen years.

Then her body slows down.

A minute’s decision to leap to a lap.

Leaping isn’t easy anymore.

Brie is tired --- worn by age.

It is time to rest.

Brie, my love,

Thank you for your playfulness

Eagerness

Wide-eyed curiosity

In many ways we are just alike.

Thank you for your happiness

In living each new day.

I really cried over this..I just lost my beloved Bob about a month ago, though it seems like yesterday. He died at the age of 16, his life was so full. You pay great tribute to your feline friend. You must miss him terribly.

Mary
