Why do you smile so old man
On the porch counting days,
Watching a future you'll never see
Playing in the street and Summer haze?
Your days are nearly over,
Our lives have just begun,
Yet we are troubled, anxious, frightened,
While you sit smiling in the sun?
When I was young my precious child
I craved excitement as you do now.
I felt the need for daring and speed,
For battle cry and secret vow.
And as I grew and these things paled
I found new things to fill my days.
Power, prestige and golden gain
Filled my mind and ruled my ways.
But now I've slowed and Wisdom's come
To take my hand and whisper truth.
We sit and watch the wonder that's life,
And smile at the follies of my youth.
