.

A MILITARY MAN
(HE'S STILL STANDING)

He has faced the demons
found within the ways of war,
he’s fought in foreign countries
protecting foreign shores.

He has carried a rifle
along with his 80 pound pack
and the weight of the entire world
all heaped upon his back.

He was still learning to live
as he was learning how to kill,
he’s found the search for liberty
can be a mighty bitter pill.

He’s a military man
with humanitarian intent
fighting the worlds demons
wherever he’s been sent.

He joined because of duty,
because he felt it was his chore,
just as it was for his brothers,
all those who went before.

 Freedom comes at a cost
not all are willing to pay,
but a soldier pays that price
each and every day.

Those who’ve carried war weapons,
and slept together in a trench,
who know the smell of death
and have endured that awful stench.

Only those who’ve served the cause
can ever fully understand
the price that’s paid for freedom
by a military man.

We’re thankful he’s still standing,
that freedom is still the goal,
but most of all we’re thankful
for all who have filled that roll.

When the flag of freedom waves
and the world’s at peace again,
when the soldiers all return,
Finally! we’ll record this as a win.

When the flag of freedom waves…
when the world’s at peace again,,,,
when our soldiers all return,,,,
THEN, and only THEN!
will we truly count it as a win.

That’s when all of us
will count it as a win.

Dick,
very well appointed piece, I will have to add my agreement with those who do not think war will cease to exist for long after we all are forgotten..it is too bad, but man has not yet attained that which will allow that to occure.

Sadly I think there will always be terrible men or groups of men who will seek to dominate others, also it is sad that the only real response they understand is a greater power. You describe a soldier's life well and I salute all who fight in the name of freedom...from the young boy in the school yard who steps in between a bully and a victim to the soldiers who know that they must kill or be killed to win freedom for all.

Thanks for picking up on my title. This is a wonderful tribute to the men in the trenches who have to fight face to face. Unfortunately, war has become more and more remote with large kill zones and avatars doing the killing. The foot soldier used to fight. Now the foot soldier is told to remediate, something that is contrary to the warrior who blindly kills his foe because he hates them.

Unlike Jerry, I believe that wars on the wane, and police action will eventually take over for wars.

It is never going to happen, my friend. We will always be at war, at least in the foreseeable future. If we were to understand our enemies and quit acting like they aren't our enemies maybe then we can confront them and actually win a war. It has been a long time since we have won a war, World War II. It's time to grit up and do what has to be done.
