Can we right our wrongs and better as humans - or are we doomed?

Poem Artwork

The more I look, the more I see,

The more I analyze, the more I realize

That this ain’t the way things ought to be.

I want to bring Ethics to a Permissive Society,

I want to bring you closer to me.

Sheila,

Why did you have to blow?

This ain’t the way things ought to go!

I’m sitting here, at a quarter past three

Just chilling here, on the window sill.

I’m about to go From a View to a Kill

Suicidal thoughts are running through my head

Where will we all be at a quarter past dead?

But I choose to remove that notion from my head:

Some things are better left unsaid.

I’m still stuck in the ‘90’s

That’s why I channel PM Dawn.

I still relax with novels by Sidney Sheldon

And buy thrillers like ‘The Last Don’

Have you ever flown off to space?

Spent An Ordinary Day in an Unusual Place?

That’s what you’ll get when you come back to me

Sheila, let me show you the way things ought to be.

When morning comes, I see A Stranger in the Mirror:

That guy looking back can’t possibly be me.

What has happened to the African Dream?

What has happened to you and me?

We used to be so happy

Maybe the gods got jealous

Like in that poem called ‘Annabel Lee’

I’m just sitting here, with half an hour to kill

I'm reflecting on my life thus far

But there’s no need to cry over milk that’s spilt.

I turn on the news and reel back in horror -

It’s like everyone is trying to kill each other!

Armageddon must be just around the corner

‘Cause this ain't the way things ought to be.

Thx, George Carroll. Like you, I am a big fan of English literature and read quite a lot and I also draw from other artistic influences eg. 'An Ordinary Day in an Unusual Place' is the title of a wonderful jazz/rap album by US3, 'A Stranger in the Mirror' is a book by Sidney Sheldon, 'A View to a Kill' is a James Bond movie etc.

Ronald Hull, it's always a pleasure to read ur comments. And maybe I do deserve a wider readership but Things Aren't They Way They Ought to Be!

You are right, things aren't like they ought to be. But then, they never were because we pick and choose the best of our past to use, like the 1990s. And Sheila, perhaps she wasn't ought to be.

As usual, magnificent writing showing a broad range of literary skills and knowledge. More people need to be reading your poetry and commenting.
