He crouched in the closet, down low by the floor
His knees were bent and up close to his chest
Waiting…for the sound of the squeaky door
Would they find him? Did they find the rest?
The young child's arms around his legs gripped tightly
While his heart raced and pounded he could hardly take it
A sliver of light was the only thing he saw, it shone brightly
He didn't feel his lip between his teeth in the least bit
He tried not to make any noise, not a sound
He wondered how long he could stay there and be still
Voices. Here they come; they're walking around
He froze, afraid to breathe, not moving until…
They said, "I don't think anybody else is here."
The door swung open for a minute then closed all the way
Total darkness now increased his fear
Who were they? What were they doing? Would they go or stay?
He no longer saw shadows, he saw nothing at all
What he would give to have that hint of light back
If for no other reason but a reference point to the hall
Hatred filled his heart for this blackest of black
The front door slammed. He didn't know what to do
So he sat there wondering…was he forever forgotten.
Would he die there? Well! Was he going to?
In the darkness on the bottom like a piece of fruit that was rotten?
The fear made him tired and exhausted his head
Tears began to fall. First one, then more, like a faucet it came
It turned to sobbing. He wanted his Daddy. He wanted his bed.
He felt like he and the darkness were one in the same
He couldn't get away from it, too paralyzed to run
It made no difference if his eyes were open or closed
Hope was fading. There was help from no-one.
His demise seemed imminent, but he sat in the dark unopposed
Suddenly he heard it, his Daddy's desperate plea
Calling loudly, "Son…where are you?"
The boy's answer at first a whisper, then he…
Stood up and in spite of the darkness ran to
The arms of his father where he knew for sure
With him there was no darkness and everything was light
In the arms of his father he felt safe and secure
His Dad picked him up and he knew he was alright
