He stood thirsty at the foot of a very high mountain

That he wanted to climb

His strategy was to move upward slowly

Taking one step at a time

He planned to move carefully

To the edge he would not get close

The rocks can come unloosened and slip quickly

This would erode what he needed the most

Sure footing is important to any journey

In his opinion it should be the key

That allows a man to make progress

And provides strength where there's no guarantee

For even if a man were to stumble

Adding a day to his year

As long as he's alive on the mountain

If he doesn't give up he'll persevere

He could see the top in the distance

Tempted to run to its view

He had heard all his life about the summit

How it changed all the old to the new

All he had to do was keep walking

To see the water so crystal clear

At the top he could drink from the fountain

That flowed freely without any fear

At times he would stand still and look behind him

To see how far he had come

Sometimes this really surprised him

He would not have guessed what was already done

But knowing the path before him

Was where his focus needed to be

He forced his eyes back around to the goal

Determined to reach the highest degree
