Life's Work
(for a Beloved, albeit nameless, Mentor)
She loved my work,
but pointed out
that she'd found my hat
a Distraction.
It will take away from your reading,
your work,
your blood-soaked verse.
She told me so
in red marker
across the bottom of my page: an A
with a parenthesized aside. A comment
for my consideration.
I thanked her and proceeded
to consider.
I could have hated her,
could have held a grudge,
could have labeled her a Has Been, could have
stopped writing;
instead, I bought a new hat,
and continue to do so whenever her name comes up
in conversation. Each hat
more outlandish,
more ornate,
gaudier
than the last.

I enjoyed this iron-barbed, sardonic peek behind the curtain... great write!
I'm just sitting here with my mouth open, not saying a word.
It's almost as though you reached right inside me and pulled out every imperfect thought I ever had, and are displaying them on the radio antenna through town on a Saturday afternoon.
I just can't imagine one as talented as you ever considering to stop writing so this must just be one of those poems that appeared when you lifted your pen. But it sure kicked me in the butt!
Yeah, I'm guilty of wanting to quit..
Great write Pat..as usual.

your "inner" voice! I am applauding!
