Memories sweep across my mind
I hear sweet mamma call
come home come home it's suppertime
hurry up ...come on you'all
on the front porch she'd be waiting
leaning over the wooden rail
with cool well water and a cup
in a small tin drinking pail
I still can see me as a child
playing for endless hours
chasing some pretty butterflies
and gathering fresh wild flowers
mamma would sing a hymn or two
as she washed and hung white sheets
me in a pretty checkered dress
with hot tired dirty feet
In the evening on that country porch
we'd go out on that swing
mamma would play her dulcimer
and daddy would clap and sing
what lovely tunes rang out at night
and echoed through those hills
just thinking of the harmony
still gives my body chills
Years have come and gone it seems
yet that front porch stands today
I stood there on the wooden steps
and watched a young girl play
she gathered pretty flowers
and placed her hand in mine
memories seem to have a way
of catching up with time

Years have passed since I grew up in the coal fields of wva yet the memories of simpler times still
echo in my heart Thank you Bill Murray for
arranging this for me.
At first reading there were one or two lines in this I could not make work, then I remembered your bio says you are from Charleston so I tried it again, applying a deep south accent in my mind and it works. Not bad for a limey eh? But I have an advantage, when I was in the US aeons ago my girlfriend had two great aunts from Geortgia who were visiting New York. I couldn't get away from the old girls. They were lovely but when you are 19 and the hormones call....... Excellent writing.
What a wonderful "sense" of the times, Deborah! Cherished memories and full circles of life, and always the yearning in the background to go to that place one more time, to be young and carefree and happy. Fantastic music and great help from Bill, sounds like a creative splash of a New Year shaping up for you!

I love this poem. I was trying to see if I could make a song out of it. But it might loose too much in the structuring. But I think I can if you would like that. It wouldn't change the poem. It would make it an extra version. A new song. Bill Murray
