A Dove’s Lament
Today I walked down the road of endless time,
Felt another’s suffering as if it were mine,
Watched a tiny heart break wrenched with pain,
Felt the scourging of grief’s agony over again.
I blenched and stared with a stricken gaze
While an eternity passed me by in a haze,
I turned and looked another way, but still she stood
Reaping this cruel reward, without mask or hood.
I never saw such loss or agony on any face,
And needless pain, I wanted to erase,
But life has no anesthesia for the searing pain
Of breaking hearts except what time can gain.
She stood like a statue beside her dead mate
In the middle of the road, awaiting her fate
Facing the oncoming cars without blinking an eye,
Standing bathed in torture, she waited to die.
For her time had stood still, life at its end
As death hovered above her ready to descend,
She stood frozen in time, immobilized by lost love,
As my heart reached out to a bird, aching for a dove.
I felt the anguish and tears began to flow
As I watched death’s cruel hand take its blow.
“How silly,” I said, “to feel empathy with a bird”,
But I knew, not feeling would be the thing absurd.
Connie
As I watched death’s cruel hand take its blow.
“How silly,” I said, “to feel empathy with a bird”,
But I knew, not feeling would be the thing absurd.
'Tis not absurd. It is the faithful wishing of the human heart to help all creatures.
