Why I Am This Person

by Michael Charles Messineo — Read all 96 poems by Michael Charles Messineo

As you get older, you think back into your past and look at the building blocks and influences that created who you are today. The influences of home, your friends and your environment gave you choices to absorb or deflect those markers upon which became the eventual “you” of today.

I am thinking back, to a time when I was small

A time of less restrictions, no artistic walls

Resourceful playful vision, creating story lines

A child writing busy scripts, in my busy mind.

Future building blocks, for creative paths ahead

Nights of playful dreams, as I passed the time in bed

Absorbing life around me, with filters of my choice

blending my emotions, gave birth to my own voice.

Now and then in later years, I often do look back.

Why I am this person, was my train of thought on track?

The many forks, countless lanes, the choices I have taken

I am thinking back, to these thoughts I have awakened.

Your words are ones that all of us wonder at times. We are the sum total of our life's experiences but if we keep looking back, we won't see where we are going. Engaging poem!!

Love ya!

This brought back memories, Michael. I began to write poems and stories as soon as I knew what a pencil was for. I chose some right and some wrong paths and both made me who I am. Wonderful poem, truth in verse.

We are what we eat, or as you have so will described in your poem, the sum of our experiences. Mine were great, and I have a feeling yours were, too.

As from time to time, we would give ourselves a self-evaluation and all we can do is to question ourselves: What if?...What if I had done that? What if I hadn't done that, then perhaps... I would become another person.

But fortunately... We all know the past has helped us to become the person we are today, and there's no reason to regret it.

I think we all somewhere along the line, question ourselves, our paths, our decisions and see our mistakes but...also...our accomplishments. Well done my friend.
