An unhappy grocer talks to an army man

 Kindness

(A dramatic Monologue)

Be kind? To which age do you belong?

Kindness begets wallops, contempt and ridicule.

Kindness is the stock of the stupid; those that would be suckers.

When you tell me, ‘You are kind’, I feel as though I am an ass.

Men could feel good with that description when women were not men.

You, my dear Sir, have been in the army, living away from life,

I mean life in the civilian sense. You are fortunate that you stayed away.

You have not lived at home to see others promoted over you.

I have seen that happen as I am no soldier at the country’s frontiers,

I have experienced a kind of cuckoldom in which her mind was

Colonized by others, one after another. While I looked after the shop,

She found reasons for why I was not good enough for her attention.

I cannot be kind to one who has sucked out every drop of hope, every

Reason to look forward with any chance of Fortune smiling over me.

I like this. There is a lot of truth within the framework of the poem. Case in point, "Men could feel good with that description when women were not men."
