Human Progress

Which way are we progressing?

Human Progress

The year ends, burying under it the growls and scowls

that human ugliness and venom sprout around, killing humanity.

But the sprouts will root into our lives so that the New Year

cannot escape that foulness which human progress carries along.

With stunning growth civilizations crawl toward damnation;

sprawl into a darkness that has no light. A darkness of the mind

which claims equality, fraternity, liberty, reminiscent of Macavity,

the mystery cat that could defy the laws of gravity. With no good

planned for the soul, for that sagacity with which the hermit meditated

or that mendicants found, as they went around looking for

and giving peace and blessing all with that gift, sifted out of

wisdom and a benevolence kind, which led to the peak of humanism.

Now I only find machines and machinations that rout out

Bliss and benefaction, supplanting them with bombardment

And destruction, deconstructing whatever ancient thought

And wisdom constructed with God and angels lined up behind.

If we look to those places...it is what we will see. When our spirits are bombarded with all you describe, perhaps looking closer to home, our families and the benign side of life will give us the comfort we seek...It is a beautiful world, and news givers often batter us with all that is negative and horrific....When this happens to me I have a total news break....and seek out all the wonderful stuff that is daily taking place around the world...The human Spirit needs balance....
I hope this New Year is wonderful for you....

It is a dark time in history, not scientifically speaking but humanly speaking. Well penned.

You end with quite a pessimistic tone, but I find the whole poem to be fascinating with the words that you used to describe the milieu we are in. You are right about us always constructing and then deconstructing what we've built. Such seems to be the nature of human existence. Hopefully, we are creating more good than bad.
