After passing the age of 50, there are days when I daren't look in the mirror. Of course it's a vanity thing, but I can't help it if I'm not sure I like what I see. I can scare myself sometimes wondering who the heck is that looking back at me; so different to the 'pretty young thing' I used to be. So here's a rhyme I made up on looking in the mirror one morning, sighing with dismay. Lucky for me, I don't feel like that every day. (ooh, I made that rhyme). Enjoy another of my observational light verses, and trust me, this 'getting old' thing, I've no doubt like many others, I'll get over it.

Feeling my Age …

I feel old today, I’m visibly aging before my very eyes

I feel old today, I loathe to admit it, but it’s made me realise

I’m no longer a spring chicken

No longer love’s young dream

My crow’s feet bear no witness

To the girl that I’d once been

I feel old today, the image in the mirror is a testament to this

I feel old today, I wish I hadn’t looked, since ignorance is bliss

No longer fit and agile

No longer young, it's so surreal

I’ve known it for a long while

I’m losing all my sex appeal

I feel old today, the laughter lines are ever wrinklier

I feel old today, and everywhere else is getting crinklier

I can’t even run for a bus no more

I can’t even manage to climb upstairs

Compared to the past and what I wore

I now wear clothes my old Mum wears

I feel old today, there’s nothing to allay my fears

I feel old today, of becoming one of life’s ‘Old Dears’.

There is a key to growing old

As gracefully as can be

But once the middle years took hold

Somehow that grace eluded me

I feel old today; it’s negative but there are cons and pro’s

I feel old today, inside I’m still gorgeous I suppose

So while I might feel old today

I know I feel quite bold today

This story that I told today

Still gives me hope to hold today

When they made me they broke the mould

And that kind of news is like pure gold

I have a status to uphold

And my blessings really are three-fold

So I shouldn't fret about feeling old

You share a universal and timeless theme, Pear; and I must admit that I can relate (as will are who are honest with themselves.) I love the upbeat ending. Nicely done. Love and best wishes,

Age is one of the great blessings of life,
no age, no life!
Thanks be to God for old age, and with good health!

Age Is But a State Of Mind...

You Have Got To Change Your Way Of Thinking...

I think it's very much a middle-aged thing to start to know the differences that aging brings. However, I tend to agree with Eleanor Roosevelt (below) when I find elderly people that still have it together so well and are quite healthy and attractive in their aging. I have to attribute some of it to genes and some of it to living well. I'm trying for that, but the mirror tells me that I'm not doing too well. ;-)

PS. If you are half as good-looking as your photo, you are still well ahead of 90% of the population, beautiful.

I understand your train of thought...,
But in my older eyes...you are still 'young'...:-)
I used to feel the same...but I think the messages you
Send yourself are the ones that manifest...
So keep those messages 'young and positive'...

Your lament is enjoyable, although the root of it is afflicting many a human being. Animals don't seem to worry about aging!
One thing you can do--get some younger-looking clothes. Sun-bonnets and cotton stockings are out of style; you'll never look young in them.
This poem is really fun to read and I for one can identify with it.

Richard & Michael below said it best, I can only with them agree, but I am 12 years your senior and wish to be 50 again before my several hospital stays in my mid to upper 50's & I would know to change my habits that brought on those hospital stays...But I had my heart worked on at age 59 & the doctors said I would feel twenty years younger & quite actually I do...so fix your heart if you need it, at the very least find someone to share it with, as LOVE is the best treatment to getting old...-e-

Mirror mirror on the wall,
is the reflection I see true?
It can't be me that's getting older,
so it has to be you.

As Jack Benny said, Age is mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

I can (in ways) relate to the struggle you share here. It's one of life's more sobering challenges I'm thinking. I'm certain most will relate in one way or another. As long as a persons healthy physically, mentally, spiritually, and creatively it can be a good experience. But if the bad, or questionable, habits of our youth come to haunt our bodies in the process, then not so good. Eleanor Roosevelt said: "Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art." I agree. It takes wisdom to grow old gracefully. Enjoyed the honesty. Peace to you...
