A Flag of Our Own

This particularly relates to Australias debate on becoming a republic and the adoption of a new flag

A FLAG OF OUR OWN.

A flag of our own the republicans say,
To show independance, it's the only way.
To say we've matured, really arrived
At standing alone and breaking the ties.

Those ties that have bound us to Brittanias shore,
The history that's linked us, from times of yore.
Traditions long gone remembered by few,
But there in the flag, of the red, white and blue.

The cross of St Andrew, the cross of St George,
The memories of battles, where traditions were forged,
United together with the cross of the South
Gave Australia a banner of which we are proud.

This standard was carried up Gallipoli's cliffs,
And fluttered over our great battleships,
Across the Pacific, and seas far beyond,
It flew in the desert, and strengthened the bonds.

Of nationhood, for which we've so fiercely fought.
And even today have still eagerly sought.
Without realising it we've already arrived
At nationhoods doorstep and can say with pride,

We are Australians, Aussies will do
And we have a standard, that's tested and true ,
It's' been earned by merit, of bloodshed and grit,
And we can be proud of each part of it.

No need for a roo, or a great cuddly bear
Or a curly gum leaf, at which we could stare.
Our standard will fly at the head of the mast,
Our "Nationhoods" symbol, which forever will last.
