I went to the beach to relax atop the sand
But all I found was sewage and an oil veneer
Turning the pastoral shore into no man’s land
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I wanted a soothing swim in the placid ocean
Only I found a polluted marine biosphere
Waste and rubbish had made it a toxic potion
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I wandered in the stark desert solitude
Finding only littered dunes throughout the frontier
Humanity’s rubble and trash were all I viewed
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I went to the woods to wander among the pines
Midst the scattered bleached bones of headless deer
Amid the beer bottles, junk and rotting log shrines
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I went looking to hike the forests primeval
And found nature cremated and her trees cut clear
The land eroded, and scarred now unusable
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I scaled the mountains to above the tree line
Struggling to breathe in the depleted atmosphere
I heard no singing song birds and saw no life sign
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I traversed to a secluded mountain lake
Void of flora and fauna dreary and austere
These acid waters never again a thirst to slake
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I followed a once pure river to the plains
And saw it gradually become less and less clear
Finally solid I saw it burst into flames
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I walked through deserted streets of concrete and steel
Crumbling piles of rubble which never disappear
The land misused and abused never to heal
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I departed the ground for the heavenly skies
That made my burning lungs hurt and my eyes to tear
Polluted air that rapidly causes life’s demise
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
I journeyed to the far poles of Mother Earth
Only to confirm my deepest and darkest fear
Here also living things had no viable berth
In my misery I knew Man had walked here
Floating out space I turned to sadly look back
At humanity’s dead and desolate round brown bier
Wondering how man got so far off nature’s track
Wishing that Man had walked in harmony here.
