There Are Poets and There Are Poets
"Цель творчества — самоотдача,
А не шумиха, не успех.
Позорно, ничего не знача,
Быть притчей на устах у всех."
--Борис Пастернак (1890 - 1960)
There are poets and then there are poets,
And I often wondered what it means—
It’s like a loud crowd in the darkness—
It is the poet’s words that seem to linger
Amidst all the incessant empty shouting.
Yes, there are poets and there are poets,
The ones who point and the ones who take you there,
It’s like the difference between a picture
And a vision, a constant thirst and
An actual drink of water.
I’ve been walking alone in this desert
Of all the hollow words and empty phrases,
All singing loudly of truth and freedom,
Until I heard a silent voice speak in the darkness,
That led me to my inner liberation.
Yes, there are poets and there are poets,
The ones whose silence is louder than all the poems,
Like there are artists and there are artists,
Whose canvas takes you into another realm.
Yes, there are poets and there are poets—
The ones who point and the ones who take you there.

The Door: Selected Poems
(by a Nony Maus, 'R' Pote)
Pasternak made a crack
About Josef Stalin’s beard
That when Josef heard, he thought absurd
But allowed he might’ve concurred,
“Had Boris joined the chorus
And admitted he adored us,
I’d have shared my finest tobacco
And skipped the whole Gulag fiasco.”
But Boris was a stylist
With a very discerning eye,
He found the Great Man’s bristles
A bit much to justify.
“It looks,” he told a candle,
“Like a hedge that’s lost its way,
Where a family of sparrows
Might decide to spend the day.”
The Generalissimo scowled
And he gave his snout a scrub,
He didn't like a poet
Acting like a grooming Schlub.
“My whiskers are for tractor-drivers,
And the men who forge the steel!
Not for sensitive aesthetes
Who care how velvet jackets feel.”
So Boris kept his distance
And he wrote of Doctor Z,
While staying far away
From Joe’s facial topia-ry.
For though the beard was prickly
And the Party line was grim,
It’s safer to write verses
Than to give the Boss a "trim."
Like the one that ended, "We be dead soon."
