'The Absolute Bedrock'

A reflection on the state of things here in our divided society of Northern Ireland, but I'm sure it could equally apply to many other countries today

'The Absolute Bedrock'

The bedrock of our society is failing,

The chasms are deepening

We are falling through the cracks,

Into the valleys of despair

Where do our differences lie?

Where is the consensus of morality?

Can we swim against the tides

Before we drown?

Will we find the compass to guide us?

The means to heal

The reconciliation and truth,

The unity across the divide

And all about the winds in the dark night,

That buffet us into surrender

To the inertia of indifference,

As the levers of power swing against us

I am alarmed to hear that the problems in Northern Ireland have not healed. The Irish seem to be known as a hardheaded lot. Yet John F. Kennedy came from there. So did St. Pat. And even that global healer, Bono. So what is the problem? It can't be the minuscule difference between Roman Catholics and Protestants. I think it's more or less a long continuation of a blood feud between powerbroker families of wealth.

Yes, those kinds of strange bipolar anger do occur in other places like here in the United States of America, where the president goes to my birth state, the birth of the progressive Republican party, progressive taxation, unionization and other measures that gave people the freedom to think that they are now middle-class, only to find them rallying to his battle cry of hatred and, worst of all, lies.

"equally apply to many other countries today"

You flat out have that right, Mary, bedrock all around us . . .

Here's hoping there's a brighter future ahead, with compassion and empathy leading the way.
