A protest poem

'The Robber Barons'

The tentacles of corruption reach deep,
To choke the life of democracy
Greasy hands that tear our lives apart,
As they plunder a nation

The great game of living,
Beyond the limits of legality
As they exercise their rights,
To rule like despots from another age

Our dreams are not theirs,
To take and shape
Into a world of inequality,
As they turn another page

Where their lives are defined,
By the measure of their avarice
As we are consumed piece by piece,
By the vampires in our darkening nights

As they flaunt in our faces,
We are waiting for another sunrise
When the discontent will stir the hearts,
Of a nation on its knees

Our dreams will be better dreams,
Our children will have futures free
From the grasping hands who stole the lives,
Of a lost generation

I know your point of view is from Ireland, but it matches the United States and much of the world. It is beyond me how people of such stature get in the world unless they cheat. The game is all about money and money placed in the right position greases the skids to the moneyed delight.

The truth has never been plainer. You said it, and said it well. The one percent control the world, leaving the common people further and further behind.

My mom says ‘If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything’. Sorry mom but under the guise of poetic license I penned these beauties.
