The Knowing

November 3, 2013

 

Yellow glowing eyes and a shrewd sharp beak

Ruffled feather folds which belie

The kindness beneath as she envelops

A downy bundle in the span of her wings –

She stares me down silently, willing me

To dare penetrate that barrier –

And fear mixes with adrenaline as I look back

Yet telepathically she understands

I will never hurt her soul

Or take from her brood –

For I marvel at the perfection of nature

And I am better for the knowing

As she hides in the invisibility of plain sight

A beautiful description of the owl. As a youth, I was thought that they were evil, fair game. But now I look at them as part of nature's perfection, keeping the small rodent population in check.

One time I had the good fortune to have a screech owl in my house. In order to put him back outside, I used a broom for him to perch on. I was shocked at his weight… like a feather. A feather dressed in feathers with a sharp beak, sharp talons and in penetrating eyes. Hunting only in the night. Unforgettable.
