Under a sky alive with stars,
Geese fly high overhead,
So high I could not see them
Even if it were bright daylight.
They call out encouragement
To each other and yes, to me
Below, willing to leave this earth
With courage and mindful intention.
I, too, am aware that my time
At home in my northern world
May be done.
Every now and then one eclipses
A star in the darkness, a whole star
Darkened for a moment, in its path.
How marvelous this coincidence
Of their going and my place-bound
Existence, until my spirit, perhaps,
Takes flight and travels alongside,
Toward a different, brighter world,
Somehow remembered before
Time began.

I love hearing the geese fly over at night, and feel so connected to nature in such moments.
my favorie poem is William Cullen Bryant's "To A Waterfowl."
