met the see girl down the street
inside the hotel with the kitchen god
just a brew to stew my innocence
sew me a dress for the sun maiden

create confusion when the boy chants
aloud in his own ear though i hear
walking away down the street
this boy which has caused such confession

my mother prays and i join in
the pentacle flew up to my breast
a shaft of light toward heaven
oh god, save my soul
from the wretchedness of the black hole

i’m out of there now and on to life
found the secret hidden in the lies
and now the will to free myself
choices to be made on the way up

fly on top of the elevator
all the way to the highest floor
screaming past hotel windows
hanging holding on in terror
all the way up
all the way down
hello escalator

and this is my room now
all the way up this shaft
so it’s two fifteen each night
5-6-7-8
watching the elevator scream to a stop

change in progress at the job
so tired i just need to sleep
and the boss seems so empathetic
seems too empathetic
for me and dear mary
he is off again to mexico
on a mission for his god

there is a friend who works the night shift
at the local used bookstore
she gives a great deal on dream dictionaries
and tiffany lamps

she said that they told her one day
you smoke only because you do
i guess too much is too much
on any avenue

Some vivid images here, Ira,
and a well-evoked atmosphere.
I caught a glimpse of 9/11....
first in the shaft of light and the black hole,
then in the powerful elevator sequence...
not sure if that was your intent?
Nice work!

:)

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
