You asked if we could go to Munich,

Book my favorite hotel suite

Short holiday, lots of laughs,

A good time in Germany.

I thought it was a lark,

Quick waltz in the park

Far away from talk, tell-all knowing looks

Caught up in my books, I missed your plan

Didn’t see past your made-up eyes

Barbara, you had little class, but showed a lot of style.

You shuttered our room, so polite when you asked

When you got on your knees, I couldn’t resist

You hid us in twilight; I never saw how the dawn

Brightened your quicksand smile

Barbara, why did you make a lover out of me?

An Escher sketch scratched on velvet

Together, we were opposed caricatures

Broken kaleidoscope, surreal comic strip

Of what a couple was supposed to be

In a gallery of fools tossed up for grabs,

Why did you have to choose me

Barbara?

Arrested development at seventeen

When we met,

You were twenty-three

All those years to define yourself

Instead of smooth refinement,

You chose a steel rasp

Scratched out a street-wise seranade

I was an experiment, nothing permanent,

Until you play with the scars, you gouged in me

Barbara, why did you have to fall in love with me?
