In this poem, I tried to express the painful figure of a mother who escaped from the N. Korean dictatorship that is like hell.

She is very fortunate to find a new life, but it hurts to think of the Koreans living in North Korea, which is like hell.
An Anemone Sister
My lovely sister in belief, from North Korea
when I saw you for the first time
you made me remind the yellow anemone flowers
which were blooming at the top of Baekdoo Mt.
so high that no one can predict the whether of there.
Then, I was angry and indignant of your gloomy and dark face
like the flowers covered with many scars of sharp knife
of the cold winds blowing across the wide Manchurian field.
And I was crying and questioning in my mind,
'who, why made you such a wretched figure?'
We realized the living of in S. Korea is like it of in paradise
your all things showed us N. Korea no different to hell
through frequent meeting with you in the church.
My lovely sister, we respect you as a very brave mother
as you brought up your two children to be nice adults
with great patience of hope for so long time
in spite of so cruel circumstances of the hell.
But the Sun is shining ever above the clouds and rains.
I will see you blooming as a light and vivid anemone flower
enjoying the new spring of life in here S. Korea.
The contrast between North Korea and South Korea is immense, like the difference between Cubans living in Miami and those living in Havana.
Last year I read a story about the smuggling of music into the north and the trouble it caused when discovered. The resulting need to avoid prison by trying to escape into China across the Yalu with tragic results. Those stories touched my heart greatly.
I just posted a story with North Korea as the aggressor against United States. In spite of the great loss in the United States, the story results in a wonderful change in North Korea.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
