~ Good Night

Slow tumble onto side
soft depressions await dreams
Hand tucked beneath a cheek,
I close my eyes with hopes of being lost
abandoned to a peaceful hush
Weary thoughts snug,
collapsing into soft fluffs of percale,
commanding I release the day
on the hiss of a well-deserved sigh

I draw up my knees in defense
against day’s lingering distinctions,
its muted sounds,
. . . a fitful sparrow's hallelujah
the woebegone whine of tomcat,
a wall's aches in creaks and groans
and the constant babble
of the fountain’s folly,
whose waters skip and jump
in conversations elusive

I listen with a wish
to float above these sheets,
to meticulously break apart
in atom heart and eye,
hand and hip,
of fine and delicate flakes,
sifting through the window screen
into the dark hours’ liberty

. . . and to the fountain my mist
swooping down
to tumble about the waterfall,
seizing the secrets unknown
soon quenched
and ready to be . . . me,
vestal dots poised upon the ethers
and directionless
free to follow my every whim
