Cross-eyed chickens running wild and I’m a pizza roll from crazy
My three legged dachshund, Hercules, has issues I can’t resolve
Night time seems to get darker each day
And I heard they are canceling Christmas this year
Although I have no idea who “they” is… are…
Were “they” voted in? Seize power in a silent coup?
Left with no chair when the music stopped?
Drew the short straw?
I’ve heard about them all my life but “they” seem to be nameless
Perhaps “they” are a collective of clucking cross-eyed chickens run amuck
And we kowtow to “them” blindly
I’m worried about Hercules, he has issues
And he ate my last pizza roll
Here it goes, it’s getting darker and there seems to be fewer stars
The moon is a pubic hair of its normal self
Did I mention Hercules? He has issues
The vet says not to worry he’ll work things out
And she prescribed some Xanax
I’m not sure if it’s for me or Hercules
So we share
The chickens are driving me crazy, they won’t stop their cackling
And since they are cross-eyed and it keeps getting darker
They are always running into things
Trees, fences, cars, the mailman, each other
I mean it’s a real madhouse
I’ll see if Hercules wants to split a pill
Did I mention his issues?
It’s his right rear leg that is missing
He lost it chasing a chicken
They ran out in front of a mail truck
The chicken didn’t make it so we had a Sunday dinner
Chicken and dumplings
He was squashed so fried chicken wouldn’t work
Now Hercules can’t lift his leg to pee so he squats like a girl
Maybe that’s his issue, I don’t know
He’s a dog, does he really care?
There go the chickens again, cluck, cluck, cluck
I took Hercules to the vet again
She gave him a thorough exam and found a small tumor
It is in his scrotum so if you look close
It appears like he has three testicles
Three is a magic number or it certainly is for Hercules
She took some of his blood and sent it off for test
When it came back they said he had cancer
There’s “they” again
I really would like to meet “them”
Especially since “they” are talking about my dog
I guess we figured out his issues
The vet said in time we would have to put him to sleep
Like “they” “sleep” is something I don’t understand
He may meet the chicken he chased in front of the truck
But he certainly won’t dream about him
Wake up, lick himself and have some breakfast
He’ll be gone and I’ll miss him and his issues
For now, I’ll fix some pizza rolls for us to share
It’s fun to watch him try and eat them when they’re steaming hot
Your poem is poignant in the end and well worth reading except for the rather sadistic idea of feeding the dog junk food that is too hot to eat.
