This is because I always wish I had a walk in attic.
In a corner of the attic
Sits an old cedar chest
Filled with memories from the past
Of days that were the best.
There's the old family Bible
Regal with its age
Written is the Holy Word
on each yellowed page.
There's Grandmother's golden locket
That she wore each day of her life
Placed around her neck on her wedding day
When Grandfather made her his wife.
Along with that is her wedding dress
Of pure white silk and lace
Worn so many years ago
With my Grandmother's pride and grace.
The family quilt, so full and bright
That kept off winter's chill
Felt so good on cold, rainy nights
Or when snowflakes sat upon the window sill.
The music box that poured out strains
Of a love song dear to the heart
Given to Grandmother when Grandfather left
When by war, they were forced to part.
So many things in a cedar chest
That speaks softly of days of old
Of memories that will never die
And are worth even more than gold.
Oh yes, I know exactly how you feel. I just helped my parents go through their attic. I rummaged through all the old memories. Found a picture of my 14th birthday. Had to count the candles on the cake to make sure. Found a poem I wrote to my Dad when I was 10. Hard work, but I wouldn't trade reliving those old memories for anything.
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
