Acute hearing can do that to you. Your poem is a story as well as a song. With a happy ending.
When I worked in a mobile home factory, we cranked out mobile homes on the main assembly line and then put them out on the field for finish work that was missed in the haste to move each home down the line. After two years on the line in a building filled with cats keeping the mice and rats at bay, I worked out in the finish area.
Some homes waited two or three days before we finish crews got to them. More than once during the summer that I worked, we could hear a cat meowing in the walls. Overnight, cats would get in the unfinished homes on the line and go to sleep. They would get "built in." The next day and then go out into the yard in the heat of the summer sun until finishing.
I seem to recall the "rescued" some very worried cats that summer, mostly from the rafters where there was room for them to find a nice comfy place to sleep.
