A perfect memory of a time spent with my father.....
Look up at the trees
A memory lay sleeping, locked away in my heart
Laid crumpled the paper of past faltered starts
Pen trembling in hand I finally begin
Transported through years to his timeless grin
In a garden of dreams dad lifted me high
It was then in that moment an owl caught my eye
As autumn wind came to distort the branches
Perched calmly & still, what were the chances
Eyes like vast oceans, deep sapphire blue
Safe in my dad’s arms as the wind blew
A spark in his eye as he started to speak
That there my son is astute Olly Beak
Dumbfounded, in awe, at all his grand features
He was simply the most majestic of creatures
Four day’s the owl stayed that fine autumn season
Why did he arrive?
What was the reason?
My father then smiled while adjusting his cap
He's here to watch over you, I’m certain of that
You’ll never stand solitary in times of defeat
Look up at the trees & you’ll see Olly Beak
I awoke that dull morning but the owl he was gone
His task was complete, it was time to move on
His stay was so brief at my childhood home
Yet I was left feeling never really alone
Those four days are etched upon my heart’s wall
No longer a child
No longer so small
My mind paints a canvas of moments I’ve had
A watercolour masterpiece of times spent with dad
At times I still hear his whistle on the breeze
It’s then that I pause.......
And look up at the trees
I am glad to be in the company of Corrine and Diana about this poem.
It soars with beauty, style, and grace. Your tender thoughts come through in every line. I wish my memories of my dad were half as good. We need to hear more from you, Craig.
This is a wonderful poem, so tender and yet I feel your dad's strength that he yet provides just through remembering him. I love the owl. We have one that roosts in trees nearby. I love to hear it hoot in the night.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
