What did I say to deserve that?

What could I say?

All that electricity

An electric smile

a forever smile

where'd you get a smile like that?

it forces my faces

enhances my pretenses

manages to unmake me

all at once

How can it be?

the truth is a broken bleeding

mass of barbed indifference

filled with emptiness and excess

that rarely applies to what we want

or believe we need

and yet

that smile

Is it for me?

Could joy have manifested

so pedestrian

so unassuming

but fervent and without beckoning?

I am embraced in the warmth

of a rapture less about heat

and more about light

Will it endure?

Can anything so pure

violate the cycle of life

the decay of ennui

the fabric of saturation?

I shall see

for now I will bask

and dance in the glow

reminded that if I try,

I can touch forever

That jet black hair and electric smile
Like the ash of a cigarette that brought the cancer
It says it wouldn’t and maybe even believes it didn’t
These riddles and their responses, the first signs
Like knowing you are ill yet not knowing what it is
Feeling like a hypochondriac
Then, when the immune system is spent
It strikes at its worst, takes it all over
The diagnosis finally revealed
In stage 4 it’s terminal
And you have pneumonia
About to go into a coma
No winning this
That Jet black hair and electric smile
Like cancer it waited it out, mostly silent
While it infected the whole
It finally succeeded in its quest, it usually does
Took out the whole body and the whole family
It usually does
Now time to heal, for those that survive
As best we can
