Ten, Nine, Eight
I’m down for the count
I look for the eagle
His wings to surmount
I see him nowhere
Not anywhere near me
Nor even close to life’s ring
Of failed victories.
Seven
Is that referee still counting?
Who appointed him anyway?
To be the one to call my destiny.
Can’t he see that I’m no longer fighting?

When will it all be over and done?
What shame I feel
Lying flat on my back
Can’t they see I’ve tossed in the towel
On life’s wrestling match?

I breathe relief as I hear the last count
I close my eyes, I open my mouth
A sigh escapes through my parted lips
As in the distance, I hear him announce
“Ladies and Gentlemen,
