It’s hard out here for a poet; pay that
cover charge, make that 1 drink minimum.
I really don’t want to read a poem tonight
hear people complain
that I don’t know how
to rhyme or do meter
I don’t wan’t to read a poem tonight
to hear people fight about
my poetry; if it’s valid or not
be stared at dead blank, hated
like why’d I want to go there like that again,
I don’t want to read a poem tonight
then explain why I picked this subject
or that to write about and listen
to people tell me how my poetry
really isn’t poetry, it’s prose
How all I do is tell the same old
stories in different voices
I REALLY don’t want to read a poem tonight
make people listen to, as they say,
Same old shit again everyday,
I mean, doesn’t she ever write
anything new anymore, anyway
I don’t want to read a poem tonight
to listen to people say again
they’re tired of hearing about
who did what to who
It’s all old news about lost souls anyway
I don’t want to read another poem
that proves Seinfeld has nothing on me
You get more sarcasm from me in one poem
than you get in a whole season of Seinfeld;
I don’t want to fight anymore about how
I’m not right to write about everyone’s secrets
I just don’t want have to read a poem tonight
This is another amazing opus from Joy Leftow. You've done more than hit-the-nail-on-the-head! Writing is a very subjective thing. And this is a testament that we at least treat all writing with respect as with art. We don't need to like one's work especially if we don't approve of the subject matter. But we must all respect the potential and power of the written word. Thanks so much for sharing your gift. My best, Gloria

Oh, Joy. You have written what lies buried in my heart. I love your straightforward, first-person, telling-like-it-is direct style. You shoot from the hip and take no prisoners. Where do I sign up to join your posse?
In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!

Screw it then and continue to write.
I enjoyed this.
