Right Hand Man

I look in the mirror and what do I see?

A mass of mistakes looking back at me.

Failures and heartaches, injustice and pain.

Betrayal, denial and love lost in vain.

Off to the right, there's a voice pitched so high.

"Why, thank you my loved one, for letting me by."

I turn to my right to see who is there

but all I do see is the bathroom so bare.

Back to the mirror I search through my face,

this time somethin's changed and clicked into place.

There's a little less failure and a slight hint of love

and the voice to the right coos like a dove.

I turn around wildly, I know what I've heard!

But there is nothing at all, no kind of bird.

Once again to the mirror I look in dismay.

The heartache I saw has now given way

to healing and kindness and oh, is it true ?

The voice to the right says it's good to be you.

I refuse and say firmly "That can't possibly be."

"Approval from others was more important than me."

"Nonesense!" says the voice, "That's gobledygook"

"You need no one's approval, just take a look."

So I do, I look back to the mirror and stare

the denial is gone and there's acceptance in there.

The betrayal, the failure, it's all just a dream.

My vision has changed to good self esteem.

Anything of value, I do now know,

comes from acceptance of self and letting that show.

A philosophical exploration, with a touch of lightness. The morale of the story is inescapable and quintessential.

Please allow me to tell you that you have a composition of a great great poet. The depth of thought and the flow and a control on words is extraordinary. Lines like "A mass of mistakes looking back at me" can only come from the pens and pains of great muse...

Wonderful self-discovery piece. Sometimes we're all the help we need if we just take the time to listen to ourselves. That little voice inside us ain't just whistlin dixie anymore.
