For a paragraph
in the local paper,
your face on TV,
an inch or two on the
library shelf, you seal
yourself in a cell
of solitude,
deny your eyes
the beauty of nature:
sunset, sunrise,
sprays of silver
o'er rippling cobalt--
even the pure azure
that lovers see...
Oh, how austerely
we regement our
short allotted days,
all for that temporary
season of praise.
