Living Ocean

I accept the climate is changing but challenge the oversimplifications of climate science. The scientists warn us climate change will cause massive extinctions, species will be destroyed, nations will die, the oceans will swamp huge areas of land as sea levels rise and lots of scaremongering stuff like that. But life in the seas has survived much worse catastrophes, much more violent changes than anything we puny humand can conjure up. It is a measure of the arrogance of humans in general and scientists in particular to imagine we puny humans could destroy the planet.

The ocean always changes; ages pass
and life goes on around the shallows,
shoals and reefs and in the abyssal depths
marine creatures are living, evolving,
solving problems they encounter, competeing
for survival against environment and rival.

When the scientist informs us oceans are
in trouble, mass extinctions threaten,
the eco system is about to crumble
on a scale unprecedented in the whole
of human history and it is all a direct result of
humans' irresponsible activity, then maybe
we should double our order for scepticism.
At the risk of a schism we should question
their proclivity for hyperbole and dramatisation.

Ten thousand years we humans have
fished the waters, gathered the shore's bounty,
sailed the seas to trade and conquer.
Two billion years have passed since
living creatures found a niche in the
rich waters of primeval oceans.
Then thousand years of human dominance,
an eye's blink on the scale of time.
Life has survived far worse catastrophes
than any human activity might cause.

Life has adapted, evolved and carried on,
The ocean is always changing,
the strangest creatures rearrange their genes
and adapt. It's how the system works.
The process was begun when life was born
and after we are gone it will continue.
Only our desire top control everything
makes us fear nature, that and the knowledge
that when every single one of us is dead,
life in the ever changing ocean will carry on.
