Conversation... The vocal exchange of thoughts and ideas

we take turns you and I and sometimes others
telling stories that reveal what we think and how we feel

And when we hear between the lines we discover:
~ who we are ~ who they think we are ~
who we could become ~ and what we never wish to be.

If we choose our words carefully
we succinctly relay what we want others to know
~~ we think, we hope.

If we are careless with our speech
~ we are misunderstood
~ we can hurt ~ misrepresent or falsify

The meaning of words are slanted by perceptions.
Subject to a bias cut on the slant of our judgment
filtered through the sieve of personal experience.

As he says, "that isn't what I meant."
And she replies, "it's what you said."

Who defines the meaning of literally speaking?

The orator or the listener?

You are so right, Sudo. Words are incredibly powerful and can be misused and misunderstood so easily. They are "modified" by body language (i.e. the eyes) etc. In one of my poems, I compared mean words to "shrapnel." Thank you. Love and best wishes,

Regis
