Impromptu writing from a workshop, from an article written about the lives affected by the March 11 Japanese tsunami.

Scattered

We would be wise to take care with what we wish for.
Yesterday we longed for economic growth, jobs, and a nuclear power plant.
And fortune rained on us as we were granted all we hoped for,
while disregarding thoughts of any danger.

One swift wave hit our shores, now gone, it feels calm and quiet.
It left its remains on our lives. Leaves us adrift in its bobbing, rippling after effects.
We now drift, scattered from our home.  We thought we’d only be gone a little while.
Now we are  – no where to go.

Moved from place to place, our mayor says we should stay together.
We were last evacuated from the stadium which put us out so they could reopen concerts.
And though we are told it is not safe, I need to go home, return to make money and to care for my elderly Mother.

With all our other town folk,
we are still scattered,
fragmented particles drifting
our remains walk in the shadow of nuclear waste.
