Mice
They were connected to our youth.
Those first
hole-in-the-walls.
They crashed our apartments
like they were
raucous neighborhood parties.
The snap in the dead of night
of the trap's metal, ravenous jaw--
Death?
or a glorious heist?
Of mice and men,
it was all
a game of chance--
we slipped in treacherous holes
as easily
as we slipped out--
Ready for any destination--
not yet prepared
for any
hesitation
