The green splendor
The pulsing, living summer
Receding like the tide
Surrendering to time

After the fall cycles through
The trees stripped
The ground faded
The brilliant colors

The solstice arrives
The ground freezes
The sky dulls to silver
The winds pierce through

Winter birds fluffed like cotton
The buzz of insects nonexistent
The sky seems empty
An unfeeling dome of gray

The animals huddled
Their tracks in the snow
Their steaming breaths
Coming from their inner warmth

Skeleton trees
Reaching their talons to the sky
Rivers frozen
Casting rainbows within the ice

A glittering tree
Glowing with Christmas warmth
And cheers for the New Year
Amidst the jovial faces

A wish, nothing more
For a warm blanket
And a bowl of Campbell’s soup
Cuddled up with a good book

Demeter’s sorrow makes this season
Longing for her stolen Persephone
And yet it is a great renewal
Cleaning the slate for things to come

The sleepy days and dancing fires
Chilling all but our hearts
With winter’s love and the promise of spring
Winter’s love touches us all.
